TikTok Grants The Community Control to Decrease AI-Generated Media in Timelines

The platform is rolling out a new feature that allows them to reduce the volume of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their feeds. This move comes as the platform disclosed that it now features more than 1 thousand million AI-generated clips.

Testing and Rollout

This change is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a full-scale launch. This development aligns with a surge in AI content, fueled by new video-generation tools.

The Broader AI Trend

Recent reports that almost a tenth of the most rapidly expanding video streams on another major platform only show content made by AI. A large amount of this content is considered mass-produced AI material, a term for poor-quality, factory-style content that is typically illogical or surreal.

Our research shows that a lot of users appreciate content created using AI tools, including AI artwork to science explainers, and we want to give people the ability to see more or less of that, depending on their own choices,” said a platform representative.

Volume and Proportions

TikTok disclosed that there are presently over a billion videos on its network tagged as AI-generated. Overall, over 100 mn pieces of content are uploaded to the platform each day, making AI-generated material a minor percentage of its complete catalog.

Customizing Your Feed

Users will be in a position to decrease or raise the volume of artificial media they view by using the “manage topic” feature in the application and choosing AI-made media. Further subjects that are already be adjusted under the tool include news, fashion, beauty, and dance.

Content Labeling and Policies

Its rules oblige creators to tag “realistic” AI-made content, and it bans harmful fake videos of well-known individuals or crisis events. Any realistic AI-generated clip that is unmarked can be taken down under its community policies.

In addition, the platform will henceforth apply an “AI-made” tag to content produced via its own AI tools, or identified by an collaborative effort for spotting AI-generated material. This step is designed to deter users from seeking to bypass the disclosure requirement.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is also establishing a two million dollar AI literacy fund for specialists and groups to develop educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will assist educational bodies focused on educating coding and technology.

Moderation Strategy

The platform has defended its content review process, amid debate over intentions to cut jobs for a large number of content moderators in the UK. TikTok is set to reduce 439 jobs in its content moderation department in its British office, with trade unions and online safety experts voicing alarm that staff are being displaced by machine-led review.

A senior executive explained that people-led review would still have a role, but automated tools can shield workers by filtering out the most graphic content prior to it gets reviewed by people. TikTok announced a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content handled by human moderators over the previous year due to intervention by its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to combine humans and technology to ensure user safety,” the executive stated. “We’ll have people as involved in the system, but we also think it’s extremely critical to reduce exposure to harmful content as quickly as possible, which is where a lot of the machine support is proving valuable work at speed.”
