Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system triggered extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of people nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and residences washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. One resident frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and another killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making tropical storms stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week due to the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
