Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
