Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Genius in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was anything but joyful this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had allowed a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or had there never been any cohesion keeping it intact in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, only for him to later acknowledge that the board had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Rumours that he might quit were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

Lazio appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to tell if they are improving or imploding.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Presence

At least one man kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this year. He completed the last one at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, his owning club were attempting to remain there a while longer. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in 2022-23, all but one of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Discovering His True Position

Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to identify the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
